Vacuum are at it again, or rather, a band called Vacuum have released another album. It should not be mistaken to be related in any way to anything else any band called Vacuum has released before. Excessively complicated? Not really. "Your Whole Life Is Leading Up To This" is a departure from, and the logical consequence of, everything Vacuum has done previously. The album is full of grown up, controlled playfulness that doesn't take charge but stays within the frame for sparkle, like the piano on "Mind Your Mind", which is probably a good call. Excessive electronics are shaved off and much more is left to the production, which is really good, and shows on songs such as "the Void" and "Love Earth Cry". The album for some reason reminds me of Stakka Bo's masterpiece "Jr.", but trying to pinpoint the likeness beyond an elusive feel is hopeless.
I felt I had a good grip on this album, listening to it for the first time, and having some four songs to go I decided, it's grown up mellow electronic pop, then "A Shallow Heart" suddenly toppled all such prejudices. Beat driven videogame inspired like something that might fit onto Fairlight Children's debut. What I can't figure out is how it made its way onto the album, sticking out so massively. Good though. As is "Queen" which follows. Powerful stuff that really demonstrates the full potential of the "new" Vacuum.
Vacuum have managed to re-invent themselves, making themselves more versatile with an album that has something to offer for everyone, just take "Fools Like Me" that has a stroke of Latin music. Who could have predicted that? Amazingly, it all works surprisingly well.
