Vacuum Live At Stockholm Gay Pride (2002)

(by David Haglund)

Saturday 3 June, Vacuum performed at the closing night for Stockholm Pride. When Mattias took the stage, he said jokingly, "Wow, this must be the first time that the audience are more styled than we are!" Vacuum then did the Barbara Streisand cover "What Kind of Fool", the song that was partly responsible for getting them the gig (Streisand is a big gay icon). The song was very nice, but maybe it wasn't suited for the party-hungry audience at the time. The crowd was a bit unresponsive to start with, but the reactions became more and more positive when more up-tempo songs were played and as Mattias tried to get people clapping and singing along. We did our best, me and my friends, and Mattias even gave us a little shout-out of appreciation and waved to us. Next up was the current single, "Starting (Where the Story Ended)". Mattias' voice was very powerful, but at the same time relaxed like he was jamming a bit. Some people in the audience seemed to know the lyrics for this song. The last song for the evening was "I Breathe", which was a real treat which much audience participation; singing and waving and clapping. I was very excited, since this was my first Vacuum concert for almost 3 years! I just wished they could have played some more songs. In all fairness, most artists did just 2-3 songs, so that seemed to be the standard number for the evening, even if it was a waste of a lot of fine artists.

After the gig, Mattias and Marina came out from the backstage area to watch some of the other acts of the evening, so me and my girlfriend chatted with them for a while. They were both quite pleased with the gig. Both Mattias and Marina looked forward to seeing Swedish synth/triphop artist Jay-Jay Johanson (www.jayjayjohanson.se) later on (and believe me, he was quite execptional). Marina was also a bit proud at lending her Yamaha synth to the surprise band of the night, The Ark (www.theark.nu).
