Vacuum Live At TV4 Sweden (2002)

(by Lisa Thornlei)

This morning, I saw Vacuum, or rather Mattias, on the Swedish TV4 show "Nyhetsmorgon". He first sang at 07:45, then did an interview at 09:20, and ended with a final performance at 09:30. I just talked to Mattias on the phone, and he told me that he was in the studio as early as 04:30 to do a soundcheck. This means that his voice was in pretty good shape for the performances, even though it was so early in the morning. Mattias did an acoustic set, beginning with "Starting", which I had never heard played like that before. The final song was the Gary Barlow cover "Last One Standing", which was nicely sung, but not really a song that I liked. The interview was quite short, and the hosts were a bit confused at first, figuring that the guitar player also was a member of Vacuum. They started off with the question I know Mattias hates: "How are things working out without Alexander Bard?" Mattias gave an answer similar to the one in the recent Zero Music Magazine interview; that Alexander played an important part in the creation of Vacuum, but that they have moved on since then. Mattias talked a bit about the Russian fans (which the hosts asked a lot about), saying how appreciative the Russian fans are of performers. The hosts also wondered where Marina was, so Mattias explained that Vacuum is no ordinary band. It is a group of people who use the name Vacuum for all their endeavors: songwriting, DJ'ing, performing, producing music and cartoons etc. The new album is somewhat of a summary of the last few years for Vacuum, since the material was never released in Sweden before. He also told the hosts how great Subspace was, giving them creative freedom and supporting them. Also, since I spoke to Mattias recently, I have some more news on Culture of Night. The entire album has been remastered, which means that some of the songs may sound a bit different. Some additional work has been done to the songs, but I dare not say how much, since I haven't heard them yet. I guess I will have to wait to find out. 7 days to go...
